Abstract

The life and work of Santa Teresa of Jesus had a great influence on the New Spain spiritual atmosphere by enabling a more intimate and direct relationship of women with God and contribute to the proliferation of nuns and beatified. In the Wonders of the Omnipotence and Miracles of the Grace in the life of the Venerable Servant of God Catharina of San Joan, Alonso Ramos writes the biography of Catarina of San Juan, a free slave considered saint, to whom in many passages compares with Santa Teresa. The purpose of Ramos was to create a female life model based on Teresian spirituality and values.

Abstract

The castle of Las moradas, by santa Teresa, has attracted the attention of scholars, who have tried to guess its sources. Also some artists have been interested on it and have made graphical representations. This article analyses the mystical castle of santa Teresa as a labyrinth, a symbol with different meanings, specially in occidental culture. This allegorical building presents some of the most important characteristics of the labyrinths, specifically those ones with a only path: the significance of the centre, the difficulty of the access to it and the transformation of the walker —in this case, the human soul— until the achievement of his goal, the union with God.

Abstract

This work reports on the existence of seven manuscripts conserved in three different collections of Aleppo (Syria): the Greek-Catholic/Melkite, the Georges and Mathilde Salem Foundation and the Maronite libraries. These seven co­pies contain the Arabic translations of some mystical works written by two mystic women of the Spanish Golden Century, Teresa de Ávila and María de Ágreda. The history of these Arabic versions, translated right in the heart of the Ottoman Arabic provinces, constitutes an interesting object of study that is directly linked with the manner in which many  European Western works passed to the Mediterranean Levant during the 16th and 17th centuries.
