  Abstract

  ''The detachment of ceramic tiles in buildings is a problem that still persists in several modern constructions, despite various advances achieved in the sector of façade technology and an increasingly demanding consumer public. Studies have shown that most ceramic failures in façades occur between the interface mortar and ceramic tile. '' This work intends to contribute to the study and understanding of the influence of the contact area on the interface bonding between the adhesive mortar and ceramic tile by means of the adhesion resistance evaluation from the crack propagation test in mixed mode of stress (MMF) which simulates tensile and shear forces simultaneously. A punctual progressive load was applied to a considerable number of specimens in order to promote internal tensile and shear forces. The variables incorporated into the experiment were the type of mortar employed and the mortar thickness in the specimen. The experimental results show that the bonding strength values found by the direct drive test were 60.8% (AC II) and 58.1% (AC III) higher than the results obtained by the mechanical test in mixed mode, indicating an overestimated system result of the façade covering when the direct tensile bonding strength was verified exclusively.

  Abstract

  Uncertainty propagation of fatigue crack growth life commonly aims to provide the probability distribution of the lifespan needed for probabilistic damage tolerance analysis and for structural integrity assessment. This paper presents a novel methodology for efficiently estimating the parameters of the probability distribution of fatigue lifespan considering the Pearson distribution family. First, the full second-order approach for expected value and variance prediction of probabilistic fatigue crack growth life is extended to predict higher order statistical moments of the underlying distribution. That is, the expected value (first raw moment) and the variance (second central moment) equations are complemented with the probabilistic formulations for the skewness and for the kurtosis (third and fourth central standardized moments, respectively). Then, from these moments, the Pearson distribution type is automatically determined. Finally, the parameters of the particular Pearson distribution type are estimated making the statistical moments of the constructed lifespan distribution match the first four prescribed moments predicted by the probabilistic equations. The validity of the proposed method is verified by a numerical example regarding the fatigue crack growth in a railway axle under random bending loading. It is proven that the probability density function of the lifespan is properly derived by the methodology, without knowing or assuming the output probability distribution beforehand. The methodology presented enables an efficient and an accurate quantification of the lifespan uncertainties via its probabilistic distribution. This probabilistic description of fatigue crack growth life can be subsequently used in reliability studies or in damage tolerance assessment.

  Abstract

  The purpose of this study is to predict preoperatively microvascular invasion (MVI) of solitary small hepatocellular cancer (sHCC) by using the kinetic parameters analysis on dynamic enhancement magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Patients (n = 61) with known solitary sHCC(≤3cm) were preoperatively examined with Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI first before hepatic resection. The arterial peritumoral enhancement measured from the dynamic enhancement-MRI was analyzed by using quantitative kinetic parameters, including initial enhancement (E1), peak enhancement (E''peak''), and enhancement ratio (E''R'') calculated. Correlations between quantitative kinetic parameters and MVI were evaluated and differences between MVI positive and negative groups were assessed. Histopathological analysis of liver resection confirmed that 19 patients had sHCC with MVI and that 42 patients had sHCC without MVI. Average (± standard deviation) E1 is 0.36±0.12 and 0.46±0.09, E''peak'' is 0.78±0.24 and 0.74±0.18, and E''R'' is 0.42±0.20 and 0.56±0.17 for negative and positive group, respectively. Statistical analysis showed that average E1 and ER for the positive group were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the negative group. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis between the two groups had area under the curve of 0.74 and 0.71 for E1 and E''R'', respectively. Quantitative kinetic parameters analysis for the arterial peritumoral enhancement is feasibility to the prediction and assist diagnosis of MVI in clinical practice.

  Abstract

  Quantitative investment is the process of establishing mathematical models using statistics, information technology, and mathematics to quantify and implement risks, returns, and traditional investment concepts. However, due to the backwardness of computing tools in the past, quantitative investment has not received much recognition. With the improvement of computer science and quantitative analysis theory, traditional fundamental analysis and the use of sampling statistical technology to build advanced mathematical models for investment analysis have failed to meet the requirements of investors. Therefore, the Quantitative investment strategies based on data mining technology are receiving more and more attention. In this paper, we uses MATLAB software to capture big data from financial and economic websites, and then uses neural network training models to predict the trend of stock changes, and finally establishes a suitable quantitative stock selection model. The simulation results show that only by using quantitative stock selection strategies to curb risks and selecting a suitable investment portfolio can achieve the ideal goals in the stock market.

  Abstract

  According to the so-called “maritime economy”, maritime activities are one of the key elements of the Lisbon Strategy. According to the European Union, those sectors related to the exploitation of the seas have contributed to the building of the Atlantic Area identity. Some subsectors from the maritime economy face tough times, while other offer great opportunities for economic growth and employment. In this context the HARVEST ATLANTIC (Harnessing All Resources Valuable to Economies of Seaside Territories on the Atlantic) project is developed, approved by the Atlantic Area Interreg IV-B Program. This study includes the main results obtained from the above mentioned project related to the recreational nautical sector in four countries from the Atlantic area (Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Scotland). The surveys that were conducted among companies from the sector included different aspects related with their location, innovation, human capital and policy making.

  Abstract

  Malaria is a hemoparasitosis caused by intracellular protozoa belonging to the genus Plasmodium and transmitted by the bite of femalemosquitoes of the genus Anopheles . A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in the indigenous communities of Bajo Caura,Sucre and Cedeño municipalities, Bolívar state, Venezuela, during the 2015-2016 period. The sample consisted of 244 inhabitants ofthe communities under study. An epidemiological survey was applied to each participant and a blood sample was taken by capillarypuncture, with prior consent and informed settlement. The diagnosis was made by direct parasitological methods of thick blood smearand smear. To relate the presence of malaria and epidemiological variables, the chi-square independence test was applied. Theobserved frequency was 7.0%, all detected cases belong to the Sucre municipality. Female people younger than 10 years of age weremore vulnerable to infection. The species Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax were identified, the latter being the mostprevalent. The variables fever, symptomatology associated with malaria, degree of knowledge of the disease and type of housing, wereassociated with infection by Plasmodium spp. Under the conditions of this study it is concluded that, in spite of the results found in theindigenous communities, there is a focus of active malaria transmission. Finally, the information obtained represents a contribution atthe moment of making decisions regarding the components such as surveillance, control and health promotion around malaria.
