Abstract

In this work a solid finite element based on a Total Lagrangian Formulation using logarithmic strains is combined with a classical assumed strain approach of the transverse strains for thick shells. The target is to use the element for shell simulations without shear locking. The selective mass scaling technique used to avoid that the discretization across the thickness reduce the critical time in codes with explicit integration of the momentum equations is summarized. Several examples are presented showing that the element is shear-locking free, the consequences of the selective mass scaling and the possibilities of the element for the analysis of composites laminates in non-linear material regime.

Based on existing work the talk will  discuss recent progress within this field, present some of the latest corrosion modelling activities and  point out most challenging issues like scale linking, interoperability or validation.  Demands in  prospective corrosion related modelling research will be discussed.

Abstract

This work shows the wave propagation in fluid-solid interfaces due to dynamic excitations, such interface waves are known as Scholtes waves. We studied a wide range of elastic solid materials used in engineering. The interface connects an acoustic medium (fluid) and another solid. It has been shown that by means of an analysis of diffracted waves in a fluid, it is possible to deduce the mechanical characteristics of the solid medium, specifically, its propagation velocities. For this purpose, the diffracted field of pressures and displacements, due to an initial pressure in the fluid, are expressed using boundary integral representations, which satisfy the equation of motion. The initial pressure in the fluid is represented by a Hankels function of second kind and zero order. The solution to this problem of wave propagation is obtained by means of the Indirect Boundary Element Method, which is equivalent to the well-known Somiglianas representation theorem. The validation of the results was performed by means of the Discrete Wave Number Method. Firstly, spectra of pressures to illustrate the behavior of the fluid for each solid material considered are included, then, the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm to display the results in the time domain is applied, where the emergence of Scholtes waves and the amount of energy that they carry are highlighted.

Abstract

This work presents the development of two free Graphical User Interfaces (GUI), called ''FASTLognoter'' and ''MorisonForm'', both focused on the analysis of the behaviour of offshore structures, especially of offshore wind turbines. The first one is related to the aeroelastic analysis of wind turbines, and the second is concerned with the seakeeping of marine structures. The development of these tools has been carried out using a powerful software called ''Lognoter''. This tool is free software for Knowledge Management in Technology (KMT), which integrates computer programming for allowing the development of GUIs. These GUIs give an open platform for conducting a parametric study of the structural and dynamic behaviour of marine structures. Their coupling permits the user to set a suitable way to evaluate new concepts in marine structures. Finally, an application for the intensive analysis of offshore wind turbines is shown.

Una lectura cuidadosa del Quijote revela que la genial novela no sólo está hecha con palabras. Como toda gran obra literaria, la obra cervantina está llena de silencios. El narrador (que no puede ser equiparado con Cervantes, como hemos establecido en otra ocasión) calla y omite ciertos detalles, o los dice a medias. El presente texto discute las omisiones cervantinas y las hace patente con tres ejemplos, extraídos de la primera parte de la novela, que más que descuidos o inconsistencias, como han querido ver algunos, los silencios de Cervantes nos muestran el cuidado con que el autor armó su escritura. A careful reading of Don Quixote shows that this masterly novel is not composed of words alone. As all literary masterpieces, the Cervantine work is full with silence. The narrator (who cannot be identified with Cervantes, as we have established before) keeps silent and skips over certain details, or gives partial accounts of them. This paper discusses some Cervantine omissions, and evidences by means of three passages from the first part of the novel that such silences are not overlooks or inconsistences, as some have suggested. Instead, Cervantes’ silence shows the great writing skill of the author.

El uso del término ‘gótico’ en las letras surgió en el siglo xviii para describir un movimiento que, a contracorriente de la racionalidad recién entronizada, ponía énfasis en el carácter contingente e inexplicable del mundo humano y natural. Coincidentemente, en la misma época se publicó en el archipiélago japonés una colección de narraciones centradas en lo sobrenatural, titulada Ugetsu monogatari, de Ueda Akinari. Este ensayo explora los interesantes paralelismos entre la obra de Akinari y la de escritores como Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe y Mathew Lewis, no con el afán de mostrar una relación directa entre el gótico europeo y el “gótico” japonés (algo imposible, dado el aislamiento que marcó el final del periodo feudal en Japón), sino para señalar el carácter transcultural del género, fuera de las estrechas definiciones espaciales y temporales que solemos asignarle. The term ‘Gothic’ was first used in literature by the 18th century, referring to a movement that—against the triumphant rationality—emphasized the contingent and unaccountable nature of both the human and the natural world. Coincidentally, a collection of stories with supernatural theme was published in Japan by the same time: Ugetsu Monogatari by Ueda Akinari. This assay explores the interesting parallelisms between Akinaris work and that by authors like Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe, and Mathew Lewis. It is not our aim to show a direct relationship between European Gothic and the Japanese “Gothic” (such relationship is not possible, given the isolation prevailing in Japan by the time), but to highlight the transcultural character of the Gothic, not constrained by the narrow spatial and temporal definitions usually given to the genre.

Abstract

This paper shows the recent work of the authors in the development of a time-domain FEM model for evaluation of the seal dynamics of a surface effect ship. The fluid solver developed for this purpose, uses a potential flow approach along with a stream-line integration of the free surface. The paper focuses on the free surface-structure algorithm that has been developed to allow the simulation of the complex and highly dynamic behavior of the seals in the interface between the air cushion, and the water.The developed fluid-structure interaction solver is based, on one side, on an implicit iteration algorithm, communicating pressure forces and displacements of the seals at memory level and, on the other side, on an innovative wetting and drying scheme able to predict the water action on the seals. The stability of the iterative scheme is improved by means of relaxation, and the convergence is accelerated using Aitken^s method.Several validations against experimental results have been carried out to demonstrate the developed algorithm.
